History - The Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, and Belgian Malinois began as three local variations of one breed, which was know as the Belgian Shepherd or Continental Shepherd. This is a working farm dog expected to herd and guard. It was employed as a Police dog in America by 1893. They were continued to be used as sentry dogs, messengers and draft dogs.� In 1859, the three Belgian Shepherd breeds were divided into separate breeds, with the Groenendael subsequently know as the Belgian Sheepdog. Temperament - It is playful, alert, watchful, and protective, a tough, independen, and intense dog. It can be aggressive toward other dogs and animals. It is protective of its home and family. Upkeep - This dog needs a good deal of exercise and does not do well when it doesn't have access to a yard. It is family oriented and happier in the house with the family. Its double coat needs brushing and combing twice weekly. Size - Both males and females can reach 65 pounds. Heights vary from 22 to 24 inches. |
