BELGIAN SHEEPDOG

History - The Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, and Belgian Malinois began as three local variations of one breed,  which was know as the Belgian Shepherd or Continental Shepherd.  This is a working farm dog expected to herd and guard.  It was employed as a Police dog in  America by 1893.  They were continued to be used as sentry dogs, messengers and draft dogs.  In 1859, the three Belgian Shepherd breeds were divided into  separate breeds, with the Groenendael subsequently know as the Belgian  Sheepdog.

Temperament - It is playful, alert, watchful, and protective, a tough, independen, and intense dog.  It can be  aggressive toward other dogs and animals.  It is protective of its home and family.

Upkeep - This dog needs a good deal of exercise and does not do well when it doesn't have access to a yard.  It is family oriented and happier in the house with the family.  Its double coat needs  brushing and combing twice weekly.

Size - Both males and females can reach 65 pounds.  Heights vary from 22 to 24 inches.
